TWO WATER HOLES

At noon on Sunday,  air temperature was 79 degrees farenheit,  with water temperature at 78 degrees.  The roiling bay kept most would-be swimmers on the sand over the week-end. Tourists and part-timers continue to flock the streets,  and the Saturday market at Lázaro Cárdenas was difficult to navigate.  Although there is no produce available yet for sale at los Mangos Library market (rule is vendors have to make or grow their own products), it is a much more peaceful experience. Among the 30- plus vendors, the breads, croissants, pastries, etc. (baked by a French couple) are excellent.

I bought several jars of organic imperial bee honey - some infused with tumeric, ginger or chocolate. I asked why the plain honey in clear glass jars had different colors.  Answer:  Because the types of flowers from which the honey is produced,  and the time of year the flowers are in bloom,  have a large influence on color and even taste.  There are more complex reasons as well,  having to do with actual compounds and their interactions.

On los muertos beach at sunset on Saturday,  the stunning,  almost scraping the horison sun, changed the sky from streaks of peach and gold to a dense, burnt orange.

OJO DE AGUA

The racheria (small rural settlement) Ojo de Agua ("waterhole"),  on the way to las palmas and shortly before reaching el colorado, is not the only Ojo de Agua in the area of Vallarta.  There is another another Ojo de Agua near Costco, which is much closer. The name of the street for the clinic in the ranchería was Manantial.  It is also the name of a street in the Ojo de Agua neighborhood near Costco.  It was therefore a surprise to people who didn´t check the blog or website for directions or call the PEACEAnimals fixed line to find themselves at the supposedly right location and find no clinic.

BOUGAINVILLEA EN  OJO DE AGUA

Once turning east off the highway at Home Depot, the road is a two-lane one, passing Ixtapa with its New Englandish red brick, white steepled Mormon church and the large, grey cement-walled prison with the little stand across the road that rents clothing and colorful, woven plastic handbags for visits. After Ixtapa, one is in the country, driving on a gently,  undulating paved road that heads east towards the foothills and San Sebastian del Oeste.   The road, with many speed bumps, is well paved and lined with  beautiful, old parota trees.  A right turn into Ojo de Agua was well marked on both sides of the road, indicating where the PEACEAnimals clinic was.  Driving time from Vallarta was 50 minutes.

The clinic took place on a dirt road almost immediately after making the turn.  It was in an immaculate, spacious workshed,  constructed with cement and uniformly cut logs.

A white plastic table had been set up outside for a chocolate cake, sweet rolls, and  a bucket of aromatic olla ("oya")coffe, spiced with cinnamon and dark brown sugar.
DESAYUNO DONADO - OJO DE AGUA
This is a very humble community.  Nevertheless,  locals brought breakfasts and lunches for the vet team every day. Normally,  the board of director of PEACEAnimals requires that clinics outside Vallarta pay for the extra gasoline and driving time for the team.  In this case, the plea was so urgent that we voted to make an exception.  Sara, the person who first contacted me via FB, was there.  She and others had put up posters in all the nearby rancherías announcing the clinic.

Almost all owners arrived on foot with dogs either following them or led by a rope around their necks.   A sweet, smiling teen-age girl brought "Oso," a ten'year old black Lab mix with a white, mishapen muzzle. The girl told me that his previous owner had kept Oso tied up with a chain for five years with very little food.  Four years ago, while attempting to defend his home,  parts of Oso´s nose and lips were hacked off by a burglar with a machete.   Oso was rescued and after "much suffering," and is a healthy and beloved pet.

The same girl brought two small, three-month old grey and white and black and white puppies she had adopted, and pointed out their relatives at the clinc -  two half brothers, the tan father and a small, white Terrier-mix mother, all brought in by different owners.

CORRECTION:  PEACEAnimals was mistakenly listed in a recent online publication as a charity helped by a group of volunteers from the U.S. on a "working vacation" here in Vallarta.   It was at the February 5th Pets for Life (SC/Mexican business)  Isla Cuale clinic where the nine generous and energetic women volunteered.  They also did volunteer work for R.I.S.E and the SPCAPV.
