SURPRISE IN A BOX

BEACH NEXT TO CAFE VALLARTE - LA PLAYA A UN LADO DE HOTEL ROSITA Y CAFE VALLARTE

Early Saturday morning was blue and I walked down to Café VallArte to meet a friend for a cup coffee for her and a cup of hot chocolate with canela for me.  It´s a tiny place with a few barstools and tables set up on the beach sidewalk perpendicular to the northern end of the malecón and a few doors away from  Hotel Rosita.  Owned and operated by an attractive Argentine couple who have eight rescue dogs, it´s a cozy and friendly spot. (calle 31 de octubre #89 en colonia 5 de diciembre).
GLITTERING, BLUE COWBOY BOOTS FOR SALE - BOTAS IMPRESIONANTES EN VENTA
As we were leaving,  I noticed a pair of glittering, blue cowboy boots at a shop two doors away, and stopped to take a photo.  The small, cardboard box next to the boots moved.  And then a small hand came out and then a foot.  I slowly pulled back the flaps and inside was a beautiful two-year old girl smiling at me. Her father was nearby.

FLAMENCO!  Isabela Rivera Cuenca,  beauiful and brilliant flamenco dancer from Barcelona, will be performing in Puerto Vallalrta as part of her world tour.    Accompanied by two excellent guitarists and one drummer, Isabel´s show will be at the cultural center on the isla Cuale on Sunday, February 19th at 6 PM.  Tickets are 200 pesos each and for sale at the "door."  I´ve seen her dance once before here,  and she was sensational.  Short video of Isabel dancing:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=adfk9SraoAM

EL TUITO:  A bright, white full moon woke me at four in the morning on Friday.  I waited until mid-morning to drive one hour south on the almost 100% serpentine road to el Tuito.  Although it´s only a two-lane road, the name of it is carretera ("highway")200, which does become a real highway much further south.
EL CAMPO DE TUITO
Boca de Tomatlán, the small village on an inlet, is the last point near the water before beginning the climb into the Sierra Madra foothills, where one sees pine trees on both sides of the road instead of palm trees.  El Tuito, which means "Place of Beauty" or "Place of God," is ranch and farm land with an abundance of fruit trees and a large variety of birds.  The Tuito river is very low now, and is where residents say many newborn puppies and kittens are often thrown.

Among the volunteers at the clinic:  Kai Doyle, who secured volunteers and donations of $240 USD (which paid for gasoline and extra driving time for the vet team), postered the area and offered her extra casita as a location; María Santander, supporter of local artists and owner of the Copelle gallery; Bonnie Jauregui, co-owner of the beautiful Rancho Primavera;  and animal advocate Cathy Gordon, who served on the founding board of directors of the SPCAPV when Janice Chatterton and I founded it about nine years ago.

Kai and I drove around the outskirts of town with a volunteer for about an hour hoping to pick up cats and dogs to take to the clinic.  One young woman said that the small brown and white Pit Bull lying in the dirt in front of her home was pregnant, but potentially vicious.  I called to the dog, who approached wagging her tail and seemed happy with some pats.

The woman said she didn´t want the dog to have more puppies and needed her brother to give her permission.  The dog never arrived on Saturday.  Although we saw many dogs on the dirt roads and talked to several pet owners, we drove back to the clinic without any animals.

EUTHANASIA ("GOOD DEATH")  OF CATS AND DOGS IN MEXICO:  Someone mentioned to me recently that dogs and cats were no longer electrocuted in all of Mexico.  Unfortunately, this is not true. (award-winning documentary -   www.companionstonone.com)

"Electrocution is the most common method employed to kill unwanted animals in Mexico. This archaic practice is not only painful and slow, but is also highly unreliable and is often carried out with makeshift equipment in nightmarish conditions. Although federal law in Mexico requires the animals be unconscious or sedated prior to being electrocuted, this legality is virtually never enforced and the animals are almost always electrocuted while fully conscious and aware."Compassion Without Borders."
