To cool off and to enjoy the beauty of the coastline, my family and I drove 30 minutes south to Boca de Tomatlán and then took the 35-minute water taxi ride to Yelapa. The 40.mile, horseshoe-shaped Bay of Banderas is not only a very deep bay, its beauty is remarkable for the wild, lush jungle tumbling down to the rocks and boulders at the water´s edge.
We spent a hot afternoon swimming and kayaking in the tepid inlet and jumping off the pier, where two sea snakes were spotted in the water. Lunch on the beach at the Lagunita hotel, a collection of rustic palapas, was delicious and inexpensive - shrimp and ceviche tostadas, guacamole, rice, beans, salads and fish tacos. The polite beach vendors sell pareos and jewelry, and the women who bake delicious coconut, pecan, chocolate and lemon meringue pies, carry them in white covered plastic platters on their heads for 30 pesos per generous slice.
