Spring somersaulted into the San Francisco Bay Area with a light shower. In Marin, the air is scented with the fragrance of orange blossoms and lavender wisteria. Wisterious. Sitting inside a restaurant a day later, a light breeze gently blew the white blossoms of a long line of plum trees onto the sidewalk, giving it the look of having been dusted with snow. Back in Vallarta two weeks later, although the temperatures are higher than normal, the hills are still green from unseasonal rains and the lipstick pink blossoms on the amapas trees and the sun yellow blossoms on the primavera trees are in full bloom.
Alas, I missed the clinic in el Tuito. Kai Doyle, chief organizer, sent me photos. Volunteers went to Barrio Pobre in an attempt to bring back cats and dogs to the clinic. At the first home they visited, there were ten aggressive dogs, none sterilized and most of them chained. The owner wasn´t willing to have any of them fixed, but agreed to let Kai take the gentle female, whose eleven puppies were nestled in the hollow of a tree.
Unfortunately this dog could not be spayed because she still had too much milk. The next-door neighbor agreed to have his two dogs sterilized, but the man with so many dogs is contributing to a serious overpopulation of unwanted pets. Back at the clinic, Paulina joined Don Luis in singinga sweet, old Mexican children´s song to his dogs as they were succumbing to the anesthesia.
STERILIZATIONS AT EL TUITO CLINIC March 25-28:
Male dogs: 21; Female dogs: 47; Male cats: 12; Female cats: 22 TOTAL: 102
DONATIONS AT EL TUITO CLINIC: 1,409 pesos plus all meals donated for the team.
STERILIZATIONS AT LOS SAUCES CLINIC- March 18-21:
DONATIONS AT LOS SAUCES CLINIC: $1,560 MXN
1 lunch provided by AngeliCat
DONATIONS AT MEZCALES CLINIC: March 11-14 1,450 pesos
DONATIONS TO PEACEANIMALS: Michael Turner - $50 USD (Michael donates this amount every month).
MISCELLANEOUS DONATIONS: Elaine Ortiz, who has a costume jewelry business in California, donated bags of jewelry, which will be given to Friends of Puerto Vallarta Animals to be auctioned off at a future fundraiser for the Centro de Acopio. Elaine also donated 11 new leashes and 4 new collars, which will be taken to a PEACEAnimals clinic. So many dogs arrive with a rope tied around their necks or with nothing at all.
ADOPTED: "Rocco" spent just a few days in a foster home in Edmonton before he was adopted by a loving family.
"Katie," formerly called "Canela," who was found on the street with Rocco, flew to Oregon with Troy Valens on March 30th. On the way from the airport to his home, a drunk driver ran into Troy´s and Ron Thomas´vehicle and totaled it.
As Canela was bounced around, Troy took her to the vet for x-rays. No broken bones, only bruises. Troy slept on the downstairs couch with Canela the first few nights because she was in too much pain to walk up the stairs. He reports that she is fitting in with all the other dogs beautifully.
Shannon Beston, regular cat and kitten rescuer, primarily from the Isla Cuale, sent me a photo of one of the kittens I had found there and delivered to her offices. From there, the four beautiful male kittens went to Puro Gato, where the one in the photograph was adopted.
RESCUED AND NEEDS HOME: Ruth Hazlewood in Bucerias found a disoriented female Doberman mix in the middle of the highway walking in circles. Ruth took her to a vet for a check-up, where the dog was found to have very little eye sight left and a leg that was broken long ago. The dog runs very well on three legs, is disease free, and though she at least ten-years old, is described by Ruth as having "plenty of life left in her." This is a very friendly dog and needs a home. Please contact Ruth if you can help: ruthlessinmexico@hotmail.com
HOMES NEEDED: For the thousands of dogs and cats on the streets here, for hundreds of cats and dogs in refuges and in foster homes, and for dozens of healthy and beautiful dogs and cats at the Centro de Acopio, the city´s pound.
