END OF SEASON

COOLING OFF IN THE RÍO CUALE
MARINA EN LA CRUZ, NAY.

Next week-end will be the last Saturday for the farmers/artisans market in Puerto Vallarta and the last Sunday for an even bigger market in la Cruz, Nayarit.  High season is almost over, with part-timers returning to their homes in the U.S. and Canada.   Indigenous vendors,  who are for the most part selling embroidered textiles and clothing,  drive south to their towns and villages in  Oaxaca.  They will return in November, the start of high season.

PERRA EN EL MERCADO EN LA CRUZ
Last week at la Cruz market, the dense cloud cover brought temperatures to 93 degrees with 91 percent humidity.  This week-end was cooler - 81 degrees with 65% humidity.  At the Vallarta market, a young and very thin dog who had recently given birth, was looking for food in a black garbage bag.    I bought some diced chicken for her at a food stand, which she devoured immediately, and then looked at me expectantly, panting in the heat.   I came back immediately with water for her, but the tan dog had left.   Those of us who live here full or part-time or who visit this
PERRA EN EL MERCADO EN VALLARTA
beautiful place, often see homeless animals.  With very little trouble, they can easily be rescued and taken to the U.S. or Canada.

Colonia López Mateos, named after Adolfo López Mateos, a left-wing PRI president from 1958-1964, is to the north of the libramiento (tunnel road) and across the busy four-lane street from the Cruz Roja.  We have held clinics in the same empty building at least twice before, and there is still a great need for a spay/neuter program.  Wednesday was a normal surgery day, with about 25 cats and dogs sterilized.
REGISTRANDO UNA GATA Y SUS 3 BEBÉS DE 6 MESES
Thursday morning  there was a line of people with pets a block long.  Frank Ohly, a regular volunteer who was there that day, had wanted to take a photo for me, but got too busy putting animals in crates.  Forty pets were sterilized and some people had to be turned away.  On Thursday when I was there, about 35 cats and dogs were spayed and neutered.  A very kind couple from Valle de Banderas, about a 45-minute drive away, brought a stack of tied together crates with a homeless mama cat and 3 six-month old kittens inside.  Although we stopped taking more animals, an exception was made because it had been difficult to catch the family of cats and the drive had been a long one.  Unfortunately the mama cat had given birth to another litter a week earlier, so she could not be operated on.  The uterus is fragile until approximately eight weeks after giving birth and with surgery, is at risk of rupturing.

STERILIZATIONS AT COLONIA LÓPEZ MATEOS - April 15-18

TOTAL:  129

Plus:  Pregnancies terminated for 1 cat with 5 fetuses and 1 dog with 7 fetuses
Female dogs with aborted litter of 7

DONATIONS AT COLONIA LÓPEZ MATEOS:  1,325 pesos plus $5.00 Canadian

This clinic was underwritten by a  $2,750 USD grant from the Alice Morgan Wright and Edith Goode Trust (United States Humane Society).  Our clinics cost us approximately $1,800 USD.  The extra $1,000 from this grant is earmarked for future purchase of a mobile unit.
CUSTOMIZED VAN IS POSSIBILITY FOR MOBILE UNIT
This will give PEACEAnimals the ability to go into disenfranchised neighborhoods where no buildings are available for clinics.  A mobile unit will also give our free spay/neuter program greater visibility as it travels to towns and neighborhoods.  We are currently researching mobile unit resources.

NEW EDUCATION PROGRAM!  PEACEAnimals has added education to our free spay/neuter program.  Leslie Carrachatea, has been appointed education director and will also be visiting schools in the towns and neighborhoods where PEACEAnimals clinics take place.  We have seen that children are very interested in the clinics and often are the ones who bring the family pets to them.  Leslie will be presenting short seminars on how to care not only for cats and dogs, but for wildlife and the environment.  Children are often able to teach their parents.  Leslie will be taking Paulina´s place as vet tech while Paulina Stettner is on a long leave of absence.

RESCUED AND NEED HOMES:
"TYSON" NECESITA HOGAR

"Tyson," a Pit Bull mix who had been at the Centro de Acopio for 18 months.  Lonna Hull recognized his photo on the internet as a dog she and her family had known and helped feed on the streets.  him As Lonna has 19 pets at home (dogs, cats, parrots, guinea pigs), she was unable to foster him.  Tyson has been boarded now at Tibet Canino for the last 4 months. Angel, a great trainer, has been working with Tyson,  who does the treadmill daily.

Lonna´s observations during the five days Tyson stayed with her:

"He is a happy dog, loves rolling around on his back on the pavement, didn´t seem interested in the cats, and had food aggression when he was here. That was the big thing Angel has been working on with him. He walked well on a leash and  loves older children."
HERMOSO "TYSON" MERITA UN BUEN HOGAR

Per Lonna, Tyson mixes with the dogs at Tibet Canino off leash, depending on which dogs are there at the time. Tyson is a dominant dog, so would do best in a single dog home. It does not mean there cannot be other dogs in the home, but the owners need to be strong leaders.  Tyson has finished his treatment for Erlichia, and after his final blood work has been done and his rabies shot given, he will be ready to fly or go to a permanent home here in Mexico.

RESCUED AND GOING TO FOSTER HOME IN CANADA:  "Kiko," the wonderful dog who spent over 18 months at the Centro de Acopio.
Maneuel Zepeda, who lives close to the Acopio, visited Keko almost daily, teaching exciting this for this wonderful and dog to do. Keko is flying to a foster home in Canada, and someone will be very lucky to share a life with this great dog.
