SHELTERING IN - PLAYA GEMELAS - PUERTO VALLARTA - FIRST WEEK OF JULY- PRIMERA SEMANA DE JULIO

VILLA DE GUADALUPE:  Setting out for a clinic location that one has never been to, or even heard of, is often an adventure.  One can get lost.  Many corners have no street signs.  Street numbers often do not go in sequence. GPS does not work everywhere. Roads can be very dusty, pockmarked, rutted and flooded. Unmarked speed bumps, and there are many, can be startling... or amusing. 

UNAS CASA EN COL. VILLA DE GUADALUPE

Using the "Waze" app, the drive northeast to colonia Villa de Guadalupe took twenty-five minutes.  Although it was our first visit to this neighborhood, it´s very close to the municipality of Pitillal and the colonia of Coapinole. A brief morning downpour had muddied many of the dirt roads.

Surgeries took place in the front cement and brick patio of a home belonging to the family of a young woman named Cristina, who had contacted us.  As with other neighborhoods in many cities and towns in Mexico, there was visible poverty in Villa de Guadalupe.

Recent days had been hot, with high humidity and temperatures hovering at about 90 degrees.  Five cats brought to the clinic in a bird cage were soon panting,  so placed in front of a fan and operated on right away.

MOJONERAS is a dusty, inland colonia northeast of the airport and the main bus terminal. The clinics have taken place there once or twice a year, and always at the airy, cement local government building a couple of blocks from the treeless, grassless and plantless main plaza.

Animals that have been previously spayed and neutered are always treated without cost for fleas, ticks and parasites. One man said that he didn´t know if his large male dog had been sterilized. A quick look confirmed that it had been,  so the dog was treated for free and his owner given a two-cup bag of kibble and a PEACEAnimals lasso-style leash.

NIÑA CON LIBRITO DE COLOREAR DE PEACEANIMALS - MOJONERAS

ECOCIDE is what protestors on both sides of the Pitillal river were calling the bulldozing and uprooting of dozens of trees beginning at the Fluvial bridge. The action was intended to prevent flooding of nearby neighboods where the ground is less able to absorb water, the result of development.  This project, which took place in two days time while locals were "sheltering in," caused the death of many birds, turtles and other small animals living in the river or on its banks.

The Pitillal river, springing from high up in the Sierra Madres, meanders down to Puerto Vallarta, emptying into Banderas Bay.  With the removal of earth and trees, and by destroying  curves of the river that act as brakes,  the Pitillal will now move at a gallop, allowing little time for water to seep into the soil.  Excess sediment carried by the river into the forty-mile, horseshoe-shaped bay will cloud its beauty and potentially harm the fish.

COVID-19 UPDATES FOR PUERTO VALLARTA:

Hotels now at 27% occupancy, up from 0%.  Streets and sidewalks  no longer empty. Beaches not crowded. Some gyms and churches allowed to reopen at reduced numbers, with masks required.  The library, which also serves as a community center, has reopened. Nightly displays of fireworks from the "pirate" ship in Puerto Vallarta have started up again, and seem almost celebratory.

In the nearby state of Nayarit, the Four Seasons and the St. Regis hotels have reopened in Punta de Mita. Only registered guests allowed in. Occupancy rate is 30%.  Beaches closed but hotel pools open. Restaurants and shops open, golf courses open.  Fifteen minutes away in Sayulita, shops, restaurants and beach open, but very few people on it.  Other than for waiters, no masks in sight.

EL RÍO HORCONES ENTRANDO  EN LA BAHÍA - BOCA DE TOMATLÁN - HORCONES RIVER EMPTYING INTO BANDERAS BAY

Boca de Tomatlán, a small fishing village 30 minutes south of Vallarta, has only one entrance for vehicles.  It was closed for ten weeks with guards stationed 24/7. People attempting to enter were told to "go back home."  The cement malecón (promenade) in Boca, next to the río Horcones, was constructed three years ago as a gentrification gesture.  It is already beginning to break apart.

Piers south of Boca belonging to the villages of las Ánimas and Quimixto were available only to residents for transporation and for deliveries of food and necessary supplies.  All three piers have reopened and water taxis allowed to operate at 50% of passenger capacity.  No cases of coronavirus to date and no masks on display in Boca.

BELLEZA EN LA BAHÍA - EXCURSION EN PANGA

Soon after Boca reopened, I joined a panga exploration with Karla de la Peña, animal/environmental activist and owner of Boca Divers. The water in the bay was 80 degrees and very transparent. Our legs looked filmy Mediterannean blue and mysterious underneath us as a pod of small, spotted dolphins swam nearby, blissfully unaware of the troubles of humans ashore.

SAN JUAN, NAYARIT is an hour´s drive northeast of Vallarta in the farm and ranch lands of the Valley of Banderas. After a right turn at Mezcales, one passes through San Vincente and San Jose before arriving at San Juan. These immaculate "saint" towns look
very similar to each other with their central plazas, churches and small government buildings.  Other than at clinic, no masks in sight.

PEACEAnimals visits the eastern outskirts of San Juan twice a year. It´s always hosted by dóña Araceli, who provides generous breakfasts and lunches for the vet team and volunteers.  The community raises money for extra gas and driving time, which is given to Dr. Poli,  clinics director. 

ESPERANDO - SAN JUAN, NAYARIT

The street was filled with owners and their 70 pets,  some of whom had arrived as early as 5:30 AM.  Many of the dogs were brought in with ropes tied around their necks.  Cats and kittens arrived in kennels, cardboard boxes, gunnysacks, backpacks, rusty bird cages and laundry baskets.  Those who needed were given PEACEAnimals lasso-style leashes and a two-cup full bag of cat or dog food.  Our educational coloring books are always given to children.

REGISTRANDO MASCOTAS - LA COLONIA - IXTAPA

IXTAPA-Driving to San Sebastián, one passes the municipality of Ixtapa and its large prison next to the road.  The clinic took place in the tercer edad (senior citizen) small, white cement building in "la Colonia" ("colony" or "neighborhood"). "The Colony" was what the then upscale neighborhood was called during the heyday of the Montgomery Fruit Company, a subsidiary of United Fruit Co.  

BANANA TRAIN -IXTAPA

In 1923, Montgomery Fruit bought 45,000 hectares of land from a rich German resident and began cultivating bananas.  A train station was built to carry the bananas to the marina for export by United Fruit.  Ixtapa became a boom town, but it didn´t last long.  In 1931, the government began enforcing the "ejido" program and the Montgomery Fruit land was reparceled and distributed to the people who had worked on it.

Leaving the clinic, two distressed-looking young women stood near the gate, both holding dogs on ropes.  The small black female dog was thin and the short, tan plump dog was pregnant.  A bus driver on the road from a nearby disinfranchased community had let them board. The women had arrived after fifty animals had been registered and vet team didn´t want to accept more.  I asked a volunteer named Samantha if she had a car. Yes. I gave her gas money and she confirmed she would pick dogs upThursday after the clinic closed, overnight them and owners would collect Friday following surgery.

A DOG´S NEW LIFE:  There was a face mask check on May 25th when I drove across the state line between Jalisco and Nayarit, but none two days later.  From Vallarta, it´s 45 minutes to the pretty beach town of Bucerias in Nayarit. Amy Welch, treasurer of PEACEAnimals, and I met there to visit A Dog´s New Life, the shelter that opened two months ago.

After turning east at the sign for Valle de Banderas, an agricultural and ranch area, we soon came to a dusty dirt road next to an irrigation canal. After ten minutes of driving past palms, mango groves and a very fancy cock fighting farm,  we arrived.

A DOG´S NEW LIFE - BUCERIAS

The shelter is on 1.5 hectares of almost completely bare land.  An oversized cactus and a few scrawny  trees stand in the middle of it.  Kennels are spacious, clean and shaded. In addition to being walked twice a day, there are daily visits to a very large exercise area and the nearby canal for swims, leashed or unleashed, depending. Construction is ongoing, with the aim of sheltering a minimum of 150 dogs for adoption. www.adogsnewlife.org

LA CRUZ - MÁS DE 30 MURALES EN EL PUEBLO DESCRIBEN LA GENTE VIVIENDO Y QUIEN HABÍAN VIVIDO DRENO DE LAS PAREDES.  VALE UNA VISITA.

From Bucerias, Amy and I drove 15 minutes north to la Cruz, a smaller  beach town than Bucerias.  We were there to see the recent mural project sponsored by COMEX. Twenty-three painters, all but four of them Mexican, were selected to paint the stories of people who live and who had lived inside the walls. There are more than thirty murals, which makes the town of la Cruz an interesting place to slowly drive or stroll through before or after a lunch.  There is also a great fish market at the marina and a large and popular farmers/artisans market during high season.

MÁS QUE 30 MURALES EN LA CRUZ, NAYARIT

Lunch was just off the road in la Cruz at Ramones,  a small, open-air restaurant with two lime green walls, a tomato red kitchen counter and a palapa roof.  The very congenial owner/chef worked as a cook in Dallas for twenty years.  Delicious enchiladas suizas and fresh agua de mango.

LA CRUZ, NAYARIT

GOOD NEWS FOR THE SS KONIGSDAM:  Mexico repatriated 674 crew members in a three-day landing operation in Puerto Vallarta the last part of May.

THE "NEW NORMAL" - President Obrador announced June 1st as the beginning of "el nuevo normal," the relaxing of stringent COVID-19 protocols.

EL MALECÓN TODAVÍA ESTÁ CERRADO.

El malécon, Vallarta´s beach promenade, is a favorite place for strolling, running, dog walking, skateboarding and biking.  As of this writing, yellow police tape closes off the malecón.  However, sidewalks adjacent to the malecón north and south of the waterless dolphin fountain are open. as is the pedestrian bridge spanning the río cuale and sidealks to the south.

PESCANDO EL EL MALECÓN

Beaches - Scheduled to reopen in Vallarta on June 15th (people now fishing and walking on them).
Rivers - supposedly closed, but being used.
Restaurants - some never closed and some that had closed for 70 days have reopened.  (Strict hygiene rules in place).
Hotels - opened - no access to beaches or pools.  (Strict hygiene rules in place).
Shops/Boutiques - allowed to open
Gyms/Spas/Bars/Clubs/Shopping Malls/ Artisans Markets remain closed 

RIÓ CUALE:  Though not officially available to dunkers, swimmers and picnickers,  there were plenty of people in and at the very clear river the day before Vallarta returned to the "new normal."  It still does not include river visits, but police seem to be disregarding this COVID-19 regulation.

RÍO CUALE - 30 DE MAYO

A young crocodile was spotted downriver close to Oscar´s restaurant,  where the cuale flows into the bay.  Children splash around in the river there, so a crocodile could be a bad surprise. As they are protected in Vallarta,  it will be transported north to the mangrove area, not far from the airport.
