TONANTZINTLA & TLACHIHUALTEPETL

SANTA MARIA TONANTZINTLA EN CHOLULA

COLONIA DEL MAR is high up in the hills with dirt and rutted  roads and lots of homeless dogs.  The clinic took place in the donated garage space of the Chilpansingo restaurant.  Thank you to owner Rocio Ochoa,  to the volunteers who collected homeless animals and brought them to our clinic and to the two high school students who bagged donated dog kibble for distribution.
BOLSITAS DE CROQUETAS PARA LOS PERROS QUE NECESITAN - COLONIA DEL MAR

One of the street dogs, a brown and white Pittie mix described as having had "many litters," was especially appealing.  After giving her several pats and strokes,  she stood up on her hind legs, gently put her front legs on my shoulders and began to lick my face.  The woman who feeds her hopes to find a home for this very loving dog.  She will be a great and grateful pet. Email contact below photo if interested.

There was a sad sight of the beautiful, white male Shepherd mix tied to our trailer.  He was suffering from TVT (malignant venereal tumors) and would be euthanized.  There is still no chemo for animals in Vallarta.

A VISIT TO CHOLULA AND PUEBLA:  On our drive from Mexico City to Puebla, we stopped in the town of Cholula to visit la Iglesia de Santa María Tonanzintla.   Named for the Mother Goddess Tonantzin,  the Spaniards replaced her with the Virgin Mary.
STA. MARÍA DE TONANTZINTLA - CHOLULA

Puebla, founded by the Spaniards in 1531 in order to secure the trade route between Mexico City and the port of Vera Cruz, requested that the indigenous people to build a church.  The word and the structure were unknown to the inhabitants of the New World, as were the required angels and lions.

Construction of the church in nearby Cholula began in 1594, with the intricate stucco work beginning at the end of the 17th century and final completion of the church at the end of the 20th century. Santa María Tonantzintla is the only indigenous baroque style church not destroyed by the Spaniards.

Bedazzled.  Entering the church, I immediately got goosebumps. It felt like being inside an enormous, fantastically beautiful and elaborately adorned Fabergé egg. The interior is a kaleidoscopic riot of intensely bright colors, with gilded figures of animals, flowers, birds and headdresses.  Saints are both dark skinned with dark hair and dark eyes, or pale skinned with blue eyes and blonde hair.  Angels are portrayed as wide-eyed babies and children with eagle wings. There are absolutely no empty spaces here.

Our driver said that even though he had visited this church many times, it was his first time inside.  He was visibly moved when he told me "this makes me feel very proud of my heritage."

LA IGLESIA DE NUESTRA SEÑORA DE LOS REMEDIOS - SOBRE EL GRAN PIRÁMIDE DE CHOLULA

Eight miles from Cholula and four miles outside the city of Puebla is the Great Pyramid of Cholula, also known as "Tlachihualtepetl,"  "made-by-hand mountain" in the Nahuatl language.  Approaching a large hill, one sees the the very pretty terra cotta and yellow painted Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios perched on top.  It is the usual way of how the Spaniards in Mexico did things - build what was sacred to themselves on top of what was sacred to others.

EL GRAN PIRÁMIDE DE CHOLULA

Inside the grass covered hill are six super mound structures that were begun in the 3rd century AD. and completed in the 9th century AD.  The pyramid was dedicated to the god Quetzalcoatl and per volume, is the largest pyramid in the world and also the largest monument in the world.  The base measures 1,480 feet by 1,480 feet, with a height of 217 feet and a total volume of 16 billion cubic feet. Covered with grass for centuries,  the adventure is to go inside the pyramid, where a series of tunnels criss-cross the middle of it.  At one location, one can gaze down to the first platform built in the third century AD, and from another, gaze high up to the most recently built ninth platform - completed twelve centuries ago.

TENOTCHITLÁN/MEXICO CITY

EL TUITO - This very typical,  quiet Mexican town with church and central plaza is located a one-hour drive southeast of Puerto Vallarta.  PEACEAnmals makes annual visits to el Tuito, where the clinic has always been organized by Kai Doyle, former teacher from San Francisco. Kai has not only offered her casita for the clinic location, but provided bedrooms for two members of the vet team.
Bonnie Jauregui provided the other two bedrooms at her beautiful Rancho Primavera.

A VISIT TO TENOTCHITLÁN/MEXICO CITY

It has a very long last name -"The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Assumption of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven."
MIRANDO EL TEMPLO MAYOR ATRÁS DEL CATREDAL EN CDMX.  VIEWING THE TEMPLOR MAYOR ACROSS FROM THE CATHDRAL - MEXICO CITY.

Built at the zócalo, the historical center, over what was the sacred area of the Aztecs, the cathedral in Mexico City was built in stages between 1573 and 1813. Designed in the classical style with baroque decorative details, it is the largest and oldest cathedral in the Americas.  Across the street are the ruins of Templo Mayor of Tenochitlán, the Aztec capitol.
TENOTCHITLÁN/CIUDAD DE MÉXICO
The temple was found quite by accident in 1978, when electric company diggers struck a pre-hispanic monolith.  Demolitions of surrounding buildings followed, including some from the 19th century with colonial influences. Although carvings and artifacts were discovered, nothing of the size nor beauty of the
Templo Mayor remains.
TEMPLO MAYOR - CENTRO HISTÓRICO - CDMX

Very near the Zócalo is the beautiful "Secretaria de Educación Pública"  (SEP) building.  A former monastery, it was built in the classic style with graceful arches and courtyards where purple flowering jacaranda trees bloom.
SECRETARIA DE EDUCACIÓN PUBLICA (SEP)  CDMX
It was here in 1923 where Diego Rivera began his first major mural project, a series of panels depicting the illustrious and ordinary people of different regions of Mexico.

After completing the panels on the ground floor, Rivera began work on the third floor, dedicating his art to revolution and communism.  The second floor is comprised of panels of the coats- of-arms of the states of the Mexican republic painted by his students.  Only opened to the public three months ago, admission is free.  With the exception of the building´s employees, we were the only people in the building.  Allow at least two hours to see this magnificent collection of the 140 panels of Diego Rivera´s "mural."
