BRAVE NEW WORLD

RESTAURANTE CANTO PALMARES - ABIERTO - PLAYA PALMARES CLOSED.  OJALÁ PARA 1 DE JUNIO.
RESTAURANT OPEN.  BEACH CLOSED - HOPEFULYL REOPENING JUNE 1.

COLONIA LAS ARALIAS - The clinic scheduled for Ixtapa was cancelled Tuesday late afternoon. The replacement was at a regularly visited and very central location in a private bodega at los sauces park. As "essential services,"  PEACEAnimals is allowed to hold clinics during "sheltering in."

CLÍNICA EN LAS ARALIAS - DISTANCIA SOCIAL
This same location was where the government shut down the clinics on April 22nd because pet owners weren´t practicing social distancing.
Out of concern for a repeat, I arrived at 7 AM to register pets and found only half-a-dozen people waiting - and social distancing.  Martha ("Mackay") Davis and Charity and Tim Palmatier drove an hour from la Cruz to volunteer on Wednesday and returned on Friday.
SALÍO DE TOMATLÁN CON 9 MASCOTAS A LAS 4:30 DE TOMATLÁN.  LLEGÓ A IXTAPA PARA DESCUBRIR QUE LA CLÍNICA ALLÁ FUÉ CANCELADA. Y ENTONCES REGRESÓ A VALLARTA CON SUS HIJAS.

A large, black-haired woman wearing a bright blue top and her face covered in sweat, arrived with two daughters plus eight cats and one large dog.  She had left her home in Tomatlán at 4:30 AM,  driven 2 1/2 hours to Ixtapa, found a disappointed crowd in front of the government offices, read the notice with new location posted, and driven 30-minutes back to Vallarta.

On the evening of May 20th, a solitary cicada in our garden sent forth the first electric buzzes that normally precede the rainy season.
CICADA
Meteorologists predict first rains to arrive the first or second week of June. They will be less acidic due to less pollution in the atmosphere.  The cicadas, after living a nymphal life underground for approximately seventeen years, will be blissfully unaware  that they have entered a Brave New World.

CRUISE SHIP ISOLATIONS -  On May 14, there was the unusual sight of three cruise ships, including Holland America´s S.S. Konigsdam, anchored close to the maritime terminal in Puerto Vallarta. No passengers on any of them. It was reported that twenty Mexican crew members were allowed to disembark from one of the ships.
TRES CRUCEROS EN LA BAHÍA DE BANDERAS - 14 DE MAYO

On May 16, Joana Abren Ferreira, one of the crew members of the Konigsdam who had been in isolation for more than seventy-five days, posted a message and photo on FB. Although crew members have been fully complying with all the regulations required for disembarcation and there had not been a single case of coronavirus, they were not allowed to disembark.

ECONOMICALLY: Many financial experts agree that every two weeks a tourist location is shut down during high season represents one year of recovery. The "swine flu," which lasted approxiately 20 months from January 2009 to August 2010, cost Mexico an estimated $3.4 billion from touristic activities.  Recovery didn´t take place until 2013.  Eight million people are projected to enter poverty as a result of COVID-19 in Mexico.

ORGANIZADORA SAM CRESS DONANDO FRUTA Y PAN CADA DÍA EN LA PLAZA PRINCIPAL

GOOD DEEDS:  There are many.  The Mexican people are resilient and very community oriented.  Northerners living here have joined efforts to help people and animals. Support will be needed for months.  Weeks ago,  I remarked to my good friend Gabriela Garcia that it was unfortunate the virus didn´t arrive during low season.  Her response?   "We´re Mexicans!  We´re grateful we had November, December, January, February and part of March."

PLAZA PRINCIPAL - LA COLA DE GENTE ESPERANDO DONACIÓNES DE PAN Y FRUTA  CADA MAÑANA.
DONADO POR LA COMUNIDAD DE DAVANNAYOGA
On May 19th at approximately 8 AM, there were two women standing in the long line of masked men at the main plaza across from los arcos.  Angel Yoga, organized by Sam Cress and her friend Gilberto (co-founders of Beach Yoga), served 131 people that  morning.  For over a month, friends have been baking, cooking, bringing fruit, and donating cash for groceries. Alejandro, a local fireman, volunteers to supervise the line-ups.  Angel Yoga has permission from the city for this daily food program.  If you´d like to help:  samcresspv@gmail.com
JARDINES BOTÁNICOS - BOTANICAL GARDENS - PUERTO VALLARTA ABREN EL 1 DE JUNIO

REASON TO REJOICE!  The gorgeous Botanical Gardens reopen June 1st.  This is a perfect place for strolling, lunching, gift shopping and swimming in the lovely, winding Horcones river below.  Dogs welcome on leashes and can also be on one of the restaurant´s terraces.  Good food, good service and beautiful views.

ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL SPOT FOR LUNCH:  Canto Palmares, steps down from highway 200 at Palmares beach, about 20 minutes south from centro. It is a breezy, open-air restaurant where one can watch pelicans diving for fish while enjoying a delicious tostada or...

A few more steps down from the restaurant is a taped-off beach that is wonderful in normal times for swimming, walking and sunning. In the absence of humans, iguanas are now enjoying sandy strolls.
