VERDE/GREEN

RÍO PALO MARÍA - nietos Gloria y Nathaniel

The walk through the jungle along the Palo María river is very beautiful.  It is a somewhat wild and tangled path with screeching green parrots flying overhead.  Halfway to a tumbling waterfall in the green foothills above is a cool, clear green pool bordered by boulders.  Thick vines dangling from tall trees provide Tarzan swings into the water below where small fish swim.  Soon after leaving this serene spot, the walk becomes a more clambering and  leaping one over large rocks and boulders. Last week-end I took two visiting grandchildren, Gloria (10) and Nathaniel (8) and our three dogs to Palo María.  At the first waterfall, which spills over a tall, dark granite cliff, we were the only ones there when we first arrived.  The water is deeper and darker and cooler than the more shallow pool below, and the fish are larger and there are more of them. Behind the waterfall is a small cave where one can sit and enjoy the view from the other side of a watery curtain. As we were leaving, four young men arrived with a skateboard and a guitar.

                               CASACADA PALO MARÍA

The jungled foothills of the Sierra Madres are green and gleaming after frequent night rains in July and August.  All this green gives the impression of an abundance of water for Puerto Vallarta.  But the amount of rain water seeping into the ground cannot keep up with developers´demands for water pumped up from aquifers. At a recent meeting in Puerto Vallarta, an hydrologist expressed concern about the lack of proper management of the town´s aquifer and warned there could be severe water shortages in the near future.  Now is the time to start conserving.
ENSENADA CON PLAYITA - BAHÍA DE BANDERAS

The glittering water in Banderas Bay is blue-green now.  On a recent Sunday panga excursion with Karla de la Peña (Boca Divers),  we encountered two pods of orcas ten minutes after setting out from Boca de Tomatlán.   A large male approached and swam white belly up under our boat.  The engine was idled by captain Daniel as we admired these wonderful cetaceans for almost half an hour while they fed nearby.  Afterwards, we snorkeled at a gorgeous cove with a small, sandy beach where someone had constructed a miniature palapa with palm fronds. The water is filled with colorful tropical fish and thousands of small, opaque fish.  The heady perfume of white plumeria blossoms and the songs of birds we could not see floated down to us from the overhanging craggy cliff.  Beautiful Mexico.

¡ORCAS!

LOST GREEN:  One of the supporters of PEACEAnimals is GreaterGood, which partners with the Rainforest Trust.  The fires in the Amazon are an enormous tragedy for plants, animals and humans.  If you would like to help conserve 6 million acres of rainforest in Brazil, a $10 USD gift will conserve 10 acres.  To donate:  www.greatergood.org

ATENGUILLO:  "A place surrounded by water."

The town is in fact still surrounded by several streams and a river with the same name.  Antenguillo is approximately a three-hour inland drive from Puerto Vallarta.
ATENGUILLO

One reaches the town by driving over the foothills of the Sierra Madres, passing the turn-off to the picturesque former silver mining town of San Sebastián, descending into the green plateau below,  passing Mascota and its horses and ancient volcano, and passing the pilgrimage town of Talpa and its miniature virgin.

Based on the high recommendations by the township of Mascota, a request had been made to PEACEAnimals for a clinic.  When our vet team travels outside the municipality of Vallarta, the requesting local government or animal advocate group is responsible for the

VALLE DORADO, NAYARIT - "Golden Valley." Located a few miles north and across the highway from affluent Nuevo Vallarta, this small town is not in a valley and there is nothing golden.  There are rows and rows of small cement houses, a large playground and a small plaza and church.  We have been visiting Valle Dorado approximately twice a year because there are always so many animals there that need spay/neuter.  The clinic took place in a partially empty, pale blue two-story rental house next to a green field.

POSTSCRIPT RE "PETEY" - No one responded to this little rescue dog´s photos, so I took him to PetCo Friday morning for their regular three-day week-end adoption event.  My husband Ned did not want more animals.  In yoga class an hour later, I heard him call my name from the open door, saying,  "I´ve made a mistake.  Let´s go get the dog."  We did.
"PETEY" - RESCATADO Y ADOPTADO - CON NED DEWITT
When I told our six grandchildren, young Gloria responded, "I´m so happy.  We love him with all our hearts!"  Her younger brother Nathaniel asked his mother if they could be "a family that rescues dogs.
