CROCODILES EN PUERTO VALLARTA

POR TANTA LLUVIA, EL AGUA DE LA LAGUNA YA ESTÁ MÁS CERCA DE LA PLAYA Y YA HAY UNA MALLA.

CROCODILES!  Very recently, a large crocodile was caught in the marina, transported to the Ameca river and released there. A year or two ago, a chocolate Lab wearing a red collar had jumped into the water after a ball at the marina and was taken under by a crocodile. Horrified onlookers watched and filmed the crocodile as it swam leisurely between yachts and sailboats for two hours with the dog in its jaws.  A few weeks ago, a fisherman up to his ankles in the Ameca river was grabbed by a crocodile and drowned. His body showed marks of having been bitten by a crocodile. Crocodiles are protected here, and as a result, have no fear of humans.
PLAYA BOCA NEGRA

At Boca Negra beach close to the airport, there is a large lagoon filled with crocodiles.  All one had to do to see them in the past was go to the tree-lined edge of the lagoon and move a tree branch back and forth in the water for a couple of minutes.  This would signal that a  bird, dog, raccoon or other small mammal could be in the water. Across the lagoon and at first looking like a log or a large piece of driftwood, one would almost immediately see a crocodile approaching.  And then a couple more would glide silently to the place where the water was being disturbed. This was the time to return to the beach.

Boca Negra is a very long, often windswept beach, marked by black rocks reaching out in the water in the middle of it.  During turtle egg-laying season, there is usually a camp set up for a turtle study group from the University of Guadalajara.
PLAYA BOCA NEGRA - UN CAMPAMIENTO DE LA UNIVERSIDAD DE GUADALAJARA PARA ESTUDIAR TORTUGAS

Last week I took our dogs for an afternoon walk at Boca Negra. Due to continued rains, the edge of the lagoon has moved further up on the sandy beach.  There is now a fence in place in front of the narrow dirt path to the lagoon and next to the old warning signs. There is no fence in front the beach where the lagoon has extended. As the dogs approached the edge of the new perimeter of the lagoon, I shouted anxiously at them to come back.

It´s a very short distance now across the sand from the lagoon to the edge of the bay, and as the water isn´t clear at Boca Negra, I choose not to swim. Crocodiles have glands in their tongues that alligators don´t have.  These special glands excrete excess salt from their bodies, which means they can spend up to several weeks in sea water.

It had been a month since I had been out in a panga.  On my first Sunday home, we motored south an hour for swimming and snorkeling at secluded beaches.

Karla said only a couple of dolphins had been spotted in the last several weeks.  Recent storms have resulted in rough water in the bay and dolphins have not been spending much time on the surface. We did see two or three (it only takes two to form a pod),  but no mantas or turtles.  A beautiful sight was of a breakfast party of pelicans, frigates, gulls and boobies dining and diving for tuna or albacore.
DESAYUNANDO EN LA BAHIA

Stormy weather is tossing up thousands of rocks onto some of the   local beaches.  Rivers carry down more rocks, accompanied by large amounts of plastic and Styrofoam products.  Plastic straws, completely unnecessary, are the number one plastic contaminant in the world.  Globally, 31 trillion pounds of Styrofoam are produced annually.  It is a particularly insidious type of trash pollution, as it is lightweight and breaks up very easily into toxic microplastics.   We have choices to make regarding which plastic and Styrofoam products we can live without.

PLAYA CAMARRONES - "SHRIMP BEACH" - NAMED BECAUSE IN THE PAST THERE WAS AN ARROYO HERE WITH SHRIMP IN IT.  THE SHRIMP AND THE ARROYO ARE GONE.  NOMBRADO PORQUE ANTES HABÍA UN ARROYO CON CAMARRONES.  YA NO HAY ARROYO NI CAMARRONES.

SEPTEMBER 16TH - To celebrate Mexican Independence Day and the bell ringing associated with "el Grito," Christmas bell decorations were strung up over and over the streets of Puerto Vallarta. They will probably remain there until January.  Costco´s Christmas decorations were on display the first week of September.

BELLS FOR "EL GRITO" AND FOR CHRISTMAS.  CAMPANAS PARA "EL GRITO" Y PARA NAVIDAD"

Because el Día de la Independencia fell on a Saturday this year, anticipating a low turn-out for Saturday when parades take place,  the PEACEAnimals clinic held a Tuesday-Friday schedule instead of Wednesday-Saturday.

LIENZO CHARRO - JOYAS DE PEDREGAL

Dr. Poli and Dr. Pacheco set up two tents at a charrería (show place for traditional equestrian livestock herding) close to the foothills of the Sierra Madres, about a 40-minute drive from centro Vallarta. (Santa) Elena brought more cats and dogs from the people who contact her for help.  As she was unloading one of the cats from a kennel, it escaped and ran under a nearby truck.  Elena crawled under the vehicle and was able to retrieve it.  It makes an interesting photo...

LAILA SOS FUND:  500 pesos for "Chata," a one-year old female dog suffering from severe cases of manage and anemia.  The donation was given to Chata´s account number at Oxxo (Mexican chain convenience store) for Casita Animal y Bahia, the organization that rescued her.  Chata died a few days later at the vet clinic of Farvet.  She had lived a very short, sad life.

The mission of PEACEAnimals is to end the future suffering of cats and dogs.  The most efficient way to do this is via a massive, free spay/neuter clinic.  In 2016, PEACEAnimals sterilized 5,403 cats and dogs.
