ESCAPE TO PARADISE

On Friday, my good friend Gabriela Garcia and I treated ourselves to a 50-peso panga ride from Boca de Tomatlán to a tiny village in the southern part of the bay.
LEAVING BOCA BY PUBLIC PAGA. SALIENDO EN PANGA DE BOCA.
Banderas Bay glistened in the early morning sun and was almost motionless.  Instead of streaming over the water in line formations or plunging individually into the water, pelicans huddled on white-stained rocks in front of el caballo beach waiting to begin their hunt for fish.
PASANDO HERMOSA PLAYA EL CABALLO - PASSING BEAUTIFUL EL CABALLO BEACH

Passing the long strip of thi beautiful beach and its excellent swimming, and the restaurant-lined  las ánimas beach and pier, we continued further south to a tiny village set back from the shore.  After climbing off the panga. we padded quietly along on a soft, dirt path through a forest of ginger plants, palms and mango trees, picking up ripe fruit that had fallen to the ground.   A rustic wooden "gate" was the entrance to the  gorgeous, utterly deserted beach.

PUERTA RUSTICA A LA PLAYA
The curve of powdery, white sand , where a river empties during the rainy season,  is bordered with tall, shaggy palms that were slightly rustling in the breeze.  Sitting under the shade of a gum tree, we ate avocados and mangos and spent the remainder of the day in the blue-green transparent water or on the sand,  enjoying the simple bliss and beauty of México.

PLAYA DESIERTA AL SUR - DESERTED BEACH TO THE SOUTH

CORRECTION:  Last week´s blog described a sea turtle we saw from the panga as a "leatherback." Karla de la Pena (Boca Divers) was quick to inform that it was possibly an Olive Ridley turtle/tortuga olvacea o golfina, Leatherbacks have not been seen in this area for about eleven years.  This season, a nest emerged at Boca de Tomates with the sand print of a leatherback. There was no sighting of the turtle.

YELLOW BELLIED SEA SNAKE

Karla sent me the above photo of the sea snake we were surprised to see far out in the bay while out in a panga a couple of weeks ago. It looked like a carelessly tossed, double-stranded necklace as it floated in a coil on the water´s surface.   It is a pelagic sea snake, or more commonly called, a yellow bellied sea snake. It doesn´t  present much danger to humans, because although its venom is highly toxic, a defensive bite does not release much venom.  The yellow bellied sea snake´s venom is most effective when it bites into a fish, its primary source of prey.   The fish is basically paralyzed by the venom and cannot escape.  Even knowing that the small-mouthed sea snake can´t do much harm to humans, I will be glad not to find myself swimming next to one.

LAILA SOS FUND:  Two more female dogs in Boca de Tomatlán are receiving chemo treatments for TVT thanks to this fund.  Both beautiful dogs - both  Pit Bull mixes.  Contact Boca Divers via FB if interested in Sombra.

COLONIA PASO ANCHO DOG STORY:  The week before last, the PEACEAnimals spay/neuter clinic was held in colonia Buenos Aires, which is next to the río Cuale.  Up the road is Paso Ancho, where I picked up a total of  9 dogs for the clinic.  I received a call this week from Rosie, one of the women I had talked to about all the dogs in Paso Ancho that weren´t being brought to the clinic.  She asked me to meet her next to the hanging wooden bridge and then climb up a hill to see her neighbor´s dog and seven puppies (two had been killed by cars) that she has been giving food and water to daily. The entire area in front of the neighbor´s home was littered with plastic and other trash, which Rosie said they set fire to from time to time. This is smelly, throat-choking, eye-burning contamination and it´s illegal.
TUVO UN PARTO DE 9 CACHORROS.  DOS FUERON ATROPEADOS Y 7 FUERON A LA SPCAPV.  LA MAMÁ Y 2 CACHORROS MAS GRANDES DE OTRA PERRA FUERON LLEVADOS A LA CLÍNICA DE COINIA PARA ESTERILIZACIÓN EL SÁBADO.

The tan mama dog was the same dog I had seen twice - once with two children who asked if I wanted one of the puppies and who promised to bring the mama and babies to the clinic.  The second time was the week of the clinic in Buenos Aires when I gave the mama dog some bread. After a flurry of phone calls and emails, a happy ending - the SPCAPV went to the owner´s´home and took all of the seven, two-month old puppies.  Rosie´s husband Ruben took the mama and two young dogs to the Colina clinic on Saturday morning for sterilization.  Rosie told me that her neighbors no longer want their mama dog.   They just want one of the two young dogs that were dumped on the property. Will see if the Acopio (no-kill pound) can take the mama and young tan and white dog next week.  If someone would like to adopt the sweet, young mama dog, please contact me.

COLONIA VOLCANES -

Lunch donations at Cheeky Monkey aren´t ready until noon, so on Thursday, I didn´t arrive until 1:15, as it took almost an hour to drive northeast to the somewhat remote colonia of volcanes. The colonia is a scattering of ranches, humble homes and dirt roads pressed up close to the foothills of the Sierra Madres.  PEACEAnimals held a clinic at the very good public school (teachers are almost all bi-lingual) two years ago and we were overdue for a return visit.

Unfortunately for me, only the vet team, regular volunteer Frank Ohly and the two beautiful street cats he had brought for PuroGato were there when I arrived.  Seeing a few women in front of a sort of yard sale, I walked across the dusty, dirt road to take a look. An older woman was selling an assortment of clothing and toys and I asked her if she had a pet.  Not understanding the context, she gave a wide smile and held up a large, dark brown stuffed teddy bear for sale at a "good price."

10 VOLUNTARIOS VIERNES EN VOLCANES - QUE ROMPE TODOS LOS RÉCORDS.  RECORD-BREAKING 10 VOLUNTEERS!

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS AT THE CLINICS.  We are almost ALWAYS SHORT on volunteers!!!  Having people help with registrations, carrying pets from surgery tables to recovery tables, monitoring vital signs, returning pets to owners with certificates of sterilization/care instructions , plus clean-ups give the vet team more time for surgeries.  And... this is an interesting way to see different colonias and ranch areas in and around Vallarta.    Please sign up:  Leslie Caratachea via FB or infopeaceanimals@gmail.com - or simply drop by and spend as much time as you like.
