SANTA MARÍA DEL ORO

The day after the election, we drove northeast towards Guadalajara.   Passing van Gogh-like haystacks in green fields and cloud-shrouded ancient volcanos in the distance, we arrived four hours later at Santa María del Oro.
LA VISTA DE LA LAGUNA DE SANTA MARÍA DEL ORO

With a population of 7,000 people,  the town has a very small plaza, bandstand and church and mostly one-story cement houses and stores painted in pastels. Not stopping, we drove a few minutes more to "el Mirador de Jacarandas," a lookout in the upper part of the green, rolling hills that surround Santa María del Oro.  Far below us was the fantastically beautiful blue-green lagoon in the crater of what had once been an enormous volcano.   A huichol husband and wife (huicholes are an indigenous tribe known as "the healers")  were selling handmade woven and embroidered bags and beaded jewelry.  I didn´t resist a pom-pommed bag.
BOLSA HUICHOL DE SANTA MARÍA DEL ORO

We circled down slowly through forests to the clear lagoon, which is 2,000 meters long and 1,600 meters wide. Half-way around the lake on a rough, cobbled road is the Santa María Resort (http://www.santamariaresort.com.mx/),  a collection of very attractive and spacious wood cabañas on the shore of the lagoon.
SANTA MARÍA RESORT
The grounds are lush and well cared for, the pool is great, kayaks are available and the open-air restaurant has very good food and service.   Water temperature is 70-75 degrees farenheit and praised for the medicinal qualities of its mineral elements, which give the lake its extraordinary color.  In search of the core of the ancient volcano, which lies deep down in the earth´s crust,  scuba divers have disappeared.  The belief of many is that there is a subterranean passageway that connects the lagoon of Santa Maria in Nayarit to Sierra Lago (lake) in Mascota in Jalisco.

After long swims, we asked the concierge at the hotel about boat trips.Luis, who lives 10 minutes from the hotel, arrived at the appointed time in his tarp-covered panga. For 30 minutes and 250 pesos, we slowly motored around the lagoon, which is lined with several palm- thatched roof restaurants, a couple of hotels, some camping spots and several private homes, some of them with "for rent" signs on them.

Luis pointed out "Paco´s," his favorite restaurant, where we stopped for a chicharrones de pescado lunch before beginning our drive home.
UNOS RESTAURANTES EN LA ORILLA DE LA LAGUNA

On the outskirts of Santa María, we again passed the chicken "ranches," which consist of several very long, rectangular white buildings crushed full of caged chickens.  With the breeze blowing our direction this time, the smell and sight has inspired me to give up chicken, unless they have at least six happy, cage-free months.  Many years ago, it was the same kind of experience as I drove past the feed lots at the Harris Ranch in central California.

COLONIA LA FLORESTA:  A 25-minute drive north of centro, turning east at the bullring and continuing on to the busy Avenida México with an immediate right turn on a dirt road. On a telephone pole at the corner was a bright orange sign with an arrow and paw prints pointing east.   I followed four or five of the same sign and arrived easily at the clinic, which took place in the gated front area of the home of an attractive young woman named Thelma.  Although I arrived at 8:15 on Saturday morning, pet owners had all come and gone and no more animals were to be accepted.
CALLE DE LA CLÍNICA EN LA FLORESTA

Leslie Caratachea, vet tech and education director, showed me two 8-week old kittens - a grey female and a black male - that had been brought the day before by an old woman who didn´t know how to sign her name on the pet registration.  She never returned.  Angelica of AngeliCAT accepted them at her refuge and Elena Moreno, who brought 12 dogs to the clinic Saturday, brought them to Angelica the same day. (contact:  AngeliCAT vis FB - and they deliver).  Elena is a frequent visitor to the PEACEAnimals clinics, collecting pets from neighbors who don´t have cars or the time to come to a clinic.
