RÍO PALO MARÍA

We thought it was laughter we were hearing in the distance as we walked through the jungle

along the rock and boulder-strewn trail next to the Palo María river.  As we got closer to the sounds,  we saw that the cackling was coming from high up in the trees above us.
CHACHALACA
It was a few very large chachalaca birds, cousins of the American turkey.
We were on our way to the large cascade,  taking brief dunks in swimming holes as we made our gradual ascent. Cicadas, which I haven´t heard in our garden for a couple of months, were making their last communual, electric buzz before mating and vanishing.  Cicadas arrive with at the beginning of the rainy season here, and leave when it´s over.  Other than cicadas and chachalacas, the only other sound was the rush of water in the deepest sections of the river.
After an hour of navigating a mostly rocky trail, jumping from boulder to boulder and crossing back and forth across the low river, the cascade suddenly burst into sight, plunging down from a high wall of dark, veined  granite.
ACERCANDO A LA CASCADA GRANDE DEL RÍO PALO MARÍA
The pool beneath it was large and deep, shaded by cliffs in the early morning.  For a blissful hour we were the only ones there, as we swam amongst fish in the cool, clean water.  As we prepared to leave this beautiful place, some shirtless teen-age boys with backpacks walked quickly towards us.   They immediately jumped up onto boulders, grabbed the metal line that threads through thick metal rings imbedded in rock,  and began the steep and slippery and potentially dangerous climb to the other pool high above us.  Apparently three people have fallen and died here.

The Palo María river, which empties into the Bay of Banderas, is about a twenty-minute drive south from centro.  October marks our tenth year in Puerto Vallarta, and it took me this long to discover it.

Each time I see a dazzling sky, I wonder how it it could be possible to see something this beautiful in the heavens again.  Late Monday afternoon, after the entire sky had turned dark, part of the cloud cover slowly opened.  Separating from what had been a grey denseness became a startling show of brilliant white clouds in the bluest of Michaelangelo skies.

It was a hot and humid when I arrived in San Vicente, a 45-minute drive northeast from central Vallarta.  We have been here several times in the past, thanks to locals who secure donations that cover the expenses of extra gasoline and driving time for the vet team.  Frank Ohly, our star volunteer was there, plus Maria Buhaug from Norway, who is helping Brischa and Ted Borchgrevink at LADRA boarding and rescue.  It was a three-day clinic instead of three-and-a-half, because the space was rented for a party on Saturday.

Cats and kittens are brought to the clinics in backpacks, cardboard boxes, purses, bird cages, bags,  and in the arms of their owners. The two adult cats in the photo below seemed fine.  Dog often arrive without anything, or with with ropes or chains around their necks.  If you have collars and leashes to donate, please let me know.
TRAYERON DOS GATOS EN UNA BOLSA

After visiting the clinc, which took place in a walled-in, partly cemented field in back of the main plaza, I stopped at one of the food stands next to the church.  Although I have been at the plaza before and taken pictures of the painted blue church, I had never been inside.  Adorned with fresh flowers, it was a cool and completely place to wait in while my quesadilla and hibuscus "water" were being prepared.
