A PERFECT DAY FOR SNORKELING

EN UNA PANGA - LOS ARCOS
It was eighty-eight degrees farenheit with the bluest of skies.  Five of us met early at the beach in Mismaloya to hire a panga for several hours.  Our first stop was at los arcos, the large granite  outcroppings covered in scrub where blue footed boobies and pelicans build their nests.  Erosion has carved arches in the rocks, giving them their name, los arcos - "the arches."
MAHAHUITAS

After a short time snorkeling in 77 degree water, we were joined by several tour boats whose orange life-jacketed passengers immediately jumped into the water.  We sped away in our panga to Mahahuitias, the wonderful, long palm-lined beach for a swim, and then motored a few minutes further south to a gorgeous little cove where dozens of multi-colored fish were waiting for us in the clear, emerald green water.

El Tuito is part of the municipality of Cabo Corrientes, where the coastal cape of  Jalisco marks the southernmost point of the Bay of Banderas.  Although part of the one-hour drive south is along the gorgeous coastline, as the road begins to climb, palm trees fade away and pine trees begin to appear.  El Tuito is a traditional rural Mexican town with a central plaza and bandstand surrounded by arcades with small restaurants and stores, some of which sell the local cheese, organic coffe and raicilla.   Raicilla, a distilled spirit which originated in Jalisco, pre-dates the Hispanics.  Like tequila and mezcal, it is a product of the blue-ish green agave plant.  Originally illegal and sold as "moonshine," raicilla is now legal.
KAI DOYLE,- ORGANIZADORA DE LA CLÍNICA EN EL TUITO CON MAESTRA Y VOLUNTARIA PARA UN DÍA, MAGDA SALINAS ORTEGA

EL TUITO
Kai Doyle, an extremely energetic retired teacher from San Francisco, did a superb job of organizing this clinic.  In only two weeks, Kai raised the money for the clinic and secured all meals for the vet team.  The clinic took place in Kai´s casa chica, directly across the dirt road from her beautiful home that has large avocado tree in the middle of her kitchen.  The vets and Saul, who volunteers every day, stayed in the little house.   Leslie Caratachea (vet tech and education director) and I stayed at beautiful Rancho Primavera.  Taking a long walk with Bonnie Jauregui, one of the owners,  we visited Conejo, the popular Vallarta burro who is now retired there.  He looked very content in large pasture with a beautiful brown mare.
CONEJO, SU AMIGA Y BONNIE JAUREGU - RANCHO PRIMAVERA - EL TUITO

The clinic in Tuito was very busy.  Kai and her friend Magda Salinas Ortega, a teacher at the secondary school, showed me a nearby dirt road filled with dogs.  I spoke with the owner, who promised to bring all of them, except the tan and white male Pit Bull, to the clinic later in the day.  He did, and was surprised to see a Pit Bull in a kennel waiting to be spayed.
