CHANGES FOR THE ISLA CUALE

Everyone noticed it. The change in the weather,    There was wind and rain on the night of October 30th and the next morning, on the Day of the Dead, it was a heavenly, breezy day.    It is the beginning of perfect weather and high season.  And although the temperatures climbed up to 90 later in the week, the humidity percentage has dropped from about a high of about 85% to approximately 65%.  The sweaty, steamy, sticky weather in Vallarta is over until next summer.  Tourists and part-timers are arriving and the town is beginning to buzz.

PUESTA DEL SOL - PLAYA LOS MUERTOS

“We are alone, absolutely alone on this chance planet; and amid all the forms of life that surround us, not one, excepting the dog has made an alliance with us.”
~ Max DePree

The above quote appeared last week on FaceBook.  It was accompanied by the photograph of a woman in a canoe in a gorgeous blue body of water somewhere in Canada.  She is holding a paddle as she faces snow-crowned mountains.  A Golden Retriever faces the camera.   While the inhabitants of some countries eat dogs, many millions of humans do have special alliances with dogs. This alliance exists in part because we used them from the beginning as guards and hunting helpers.   The quote gives no consideration to the the fact that we kill so many animals on the planet - for food, sport, entertainment, apparel, jewelry, decorative art, cosmetics,  sexual aids, and as "nuisances," because we have arrived in what has been their territory.  Many of the beautiful wild animals on the earth today will be extinct during our lifetimes.  How can humankind possibly form alliances with animals when we are so dangerous to them?

"... amid all the forms of life that surround us...."         We are surrounded by beauty.

NOT ENDANGERED ARE CATS AND DOGS.

It takes the sterilization of 80% of cats and dogs in a given area to end the overpopulation problem of pets.  With its enormous overpopulation of cats and dogs, Mexico is not remotely close to the number.  In Puerto Vallarta, thousands of cats and dogs are living on the streetsAll sanctuaries here are filled to capacity.  There is an extreme shortage of foster homes.

There are many animal rescue groups and organizations in  Puerto Vallarta, most of which have FB pages.  Their mission is to save the cats and dogs that have been born.  The FB pages for shelters and for lost and found animals, animals that need help and animals rescued and for adoption are listed under the "resources" tab on our website.

The mission of PEACAnimals is to prevent the future suffering of cats and dogs by offering a free mobile clinic sterilization program.  We also offer an education program in the schools in the areas where the clinics take place.  In order not to dilute the message of spay/neuter,  this blog will no longer include rescued animals.  The only solutions to the overpopulation of cats and dogs are education and a mass sterilization program.

It is estimated that one non-sterilized female dog and her surviving and non-sterilized offspring can produce 67,000 puppies in six years. In seven years, one non-sterilized female cat and her surviving and her non-sterilized offspring can produce 370,000 kittens.

VOLUNTARIOS ESTÁN LIMPIANDO LA ISLA CUALE CADA  LOS SÁBADOS APARTIR DE LAS 8:30.  ¡APOYAN!  IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HELP WITH THE PROJECT OF CLEANING UP THE ISLA CUALE, PLEASE BE THERE AT APPROXIMATELY 8:30 ON SATURDAY MORNINGS.
THE ISLA CUALE is a small sliver of an island that divides downtown Vallarta to the north and the Romantic Zone to the south.  It is one of one of  Puerto Vallarta´s seven rivers originating from the Sierra Madre Mountains that tumbles down into the Bay of Banderas.  Two concrete bridges for cars, one northbound  (Insurgentes) and the other southbound (I. Vallarta),  plus two swinging footbridges are there for pedestrians.    The local government is reviewing plans for improving, beautifying and revitalizing this tiny island of cool, green space.  On Saturday, a large group was on the island pruning, weeding and collecting trash.  The las Palmas hotel brought lunch for everyone.

The island is also a favorite dumping place for kittens and cats.  Locals assume correctly that the felines will have water to drink and food to eat.  Dozens of cats live on the isla Cuale.  They help keep the rat population down, but too many cats harm the ecosystem. Many of the cats and kittens are very tame, many are sterilized and most of the sterilized ones have had their ears notched.

These cats need homes. Please consider taking a stroll on the island with a kennel and bringing a cat home.
