A PLAGUE

PLAZA - SAN VICENTE

To reach the town of San Vicente in Nayarit in the area of the Bay of Banderas, one drives north on the main highway for about 30 minutes to the beach town of Mezcales and then east for another 10 or 15 minutes.  The paved four-lane road that cuts through green fields filled with tall shrubbery soon turns into a two-lane road.

  San Vicente is the first town one arrives at in this area of several "saint" towns.  The streets are quiet and clean,  and although not away from the beaches and tourists, it feels very much like Mexico.  

The clinic took place in a walled sports field next to a chicken rotisserie and across the street from the palm-lined town plaza.  Before going to the clinic, I stopped for a few minutes to watch a young boy  in the white cement, tile and iron bandstand playing with a very frisky Chihuahua.

  There were other dogs in the plaza basking in the morning sunlight or looking for scraps of food near the food stands where people were eating quesadillas and tacos.  The dogs I saw were all either intact males or pregnant or nursing females.  At the clinic, a crowd was waiting to register their cats

 and dogs. Sadly, people had to be turned away every day at this location due to the extreme overpopulation of cats and dogs and the very positive response of the locals to spay and neuter. Dr. Poli described the unsterilized animals here a "plague."  There is an urgent need to return to the area.

There are many different kinds of plagues and they all need cures.

RESCUED AND NEED HOMES:  "Dulce," found by Nicole Beaupre at the city dump, where she often goes to feed the homeless dogs.  Shannon took the very pregnant dog to a vet, who said Dulce was anemic, dehydrated, and had no milk.  The decision was made to terminate the pregnancy, a good thing for both Dulce and the unborn puppies.  "DULCE" NECESITA HOGAR Y AMOR Dulce, who was given this name by residents of the nearby dump, means "sweet."  This is in fact a very sweet dog.  She is six years old and will have to be returned to the dump if no home is found.  Please contact Nicole if you can foster or adopt:  nicbeaupre@gmail.com DAISY CON LOS 6 NUEVOS ÓRFANOS Six 10-day old kittens whose mother was poisoned.  Soraya of Puro Gato delivered the tiny babies to Shannon Beston´s offices, where Daisy has been nursing four kittens of her own plus two orphans.  Presented with six new screaming kittens, Daisy growled but later jumped into a box with them. The older kittens have been displaced, but are able to eat on their own. They will all be Puro Gato kittens and available for adoption after being sterilized at eight weeks of age.  Contact Puro Gato via FB if interested. Shannon says that between Puro Gato, Adriana and herself, 29 kittens have been rescued recently and in foster homes or adopted. "PICKLES" BUSCA HOGAR "Pickles," found outside Mega, is an adorable nine-week old female Chihuahua/Jack Russell mix. She´s  being fostered by Mateo Jorge and will have her first puppy shots and be spayed before going to a permanent home.  Mateo says she is "partially" housebroken.   Contact:  mattmccue1977@gmail.com "MONA" EN SEPTIEMBRE DESPÚES DE ESTAR RESCATADA "Mona" is the starving Pit Bull I found on the highway the first week of September and then took to LADRA for boarding.   She recovered from erlichia and three kinds of mange under the loving care of Brischa and Ted Borchgrevink at their boarding and refuge facility, LADRA.  As Mona had just been cleared for travel and the vet had recommended a drier climate for her skin condition, I contacted Pawsitive Match Rescue Foundation in Calgary on Monday.  Mona was accepted into their foster program three days later.  I posted an SOS on FaceBook on Friday morning and at 1 PM, received an emailed offer to escort Mona to Calgary.  Jennifer Petticlerc said  that her daughter, Ashlyn Johnson, was flying to Calgary on WestJet on Saturday afternoon and could take Mona with her.  Natasha, a friend of Jennifer´s had posted the SOS shared by Merry Collins on Jennfer´s FB wall, knowing that Jennifer was in Sayulita for a wedding. JENNIFER,  KYLE,  BRISCHA, MIKE & ASHLYN CON "MONA," QUIÉN FUÉ A CALGARY SÁBADO   She also knew that Jennifer loved animals and had rescued eight dogs in Mexico, Cuba and the Domincan Republic.  After a few hours of emails and telephone calls, all arrangements were put in place for Mona.  On Saturday afternoon, I stopped at Costco on my way to the airport to buy a crate and then met up with Mona, Brischa, Ted, Jennifer, Ashlyn and Mike to thank them and to say good-bye to wonderful Mona.   THANK YOU, THANK YOU to Brischa and Ted, Jennifer and Ashlyn, Luisa and Danielle at Pawsitive Match Rescue Foundation and Kim Dewar of Friends of Puerto Vallarta Animals for securing a happy landing for Mona.  Next:  a permanent home is needed for this intelligent, athletic, healthy, happy and loving dog.  Contact:  Pawsitive Match Rescue Foundation VANESSA, ADRIANA Y "PINTO" ANTES DEL VUELO PARA EL PERRITO A CALGARY Also flying to Calgary on WestJet the same day - "Pinto," the little brown dog stabbed by a drunk.  The gentle dog was immediately rescued by Adriana Riestra of Friends of PV Animals and then taken to LADRA to recover.  Thank you to Vanessa for escorting Pinto, and to Adriana, Brischa and Ted, who do so much to help animals here.
