CONTRASTS/CONTRASTES

ABAJO DE LA CALLE PRIMERA DEL RÍO - NADANDO EN EL RÍO CUALE

CALLE PRIMERA DEL RÍO
Primera del Río is the name of the rutted dirt road next to the serpentine path overlooking the west side of the río Cuale.  I like to walk our dogs there because it is quiet and cool and we can easily go down to the river, which has an inviting swimming hole. The cement path winds past the glamorous Rivera del Cuale boutique hotel, bougainvillea, papaya trees,  small dogs sitting in front of their mostly humble homes, Pit Bulls barking from small balconies, a faded and chipped blue and white rowboat and the lively ¿Que Pasa? restaurant and bar.   At the east end of the path is a small, simple restaurant overlooking the river.  I love the thirty pesos shrimp tostadas that are sprinkled with tomato, onion and lime juice.  Calle Primera del Río is where one sees a combination of beauty, poverty and luxury.
CALLE PRIIMERA DEL RÍO - AL LADO ESTE DEL RÍO CUALE

For months I had seen the grey female Pit Bull always chained on the banks of the rió Cuale, just below this curving path where people are now planting flowers and vines.    Months ago I had asked the owners if they would like to have their dog spayed for free.  It was apparently a naive question.  On Thursday,  after the clinic in Mezcales where people were bringing in Pit Bulls to be neutered and spayed, I saw the chained and barking dog.  I had to look again to see that not far from this dog,  in a hollowed out place in the dirt and close to the river,  there were seven newborn puppies.  I walked down the embankment to get a closer view and watched as the mama licked the dirt off of one of the puppy´s faces. In a few weeks they will probably be sold, some to people who will train or have them trained to fight.   The polite young men sitting above on the sidewalk said that this was the second litter for the grey Pit Bull and that she had been bred with another Pittie.

It is the law in Puerto Vallarta that dogs and cats must be sterilized after eight weeks of age.  The fine for not doing so is 1,400 pesos.  The license for breeding dogs is more than 2,000 pesos.  This law is aimed at backyard breeders who are resources for the vicious and profitable world of dog fighting.  Illegal breeders can be reported to the Centro de Acopio - 293-3690.

DELICIOSO ALMUERZO EN BUCERIAS
Fifteen minutes away,  on the west side of the highway,  is the impeccable and upscale area of Bucerias.  Northerners ride bicycles and horses on one of the two quiet main streets that run parallel to the long, sandy beach.  Magenta, peach, pale pink and white bougainvillea tumble over terracotta walls.  Attractive shops and restaurants line the streets and   and indigenous people from Chiapas sell handicrafts on the sidewalks.

After visiting the clinic, my friend María enjoyed a sat on white plastic chairs on a side street in Bucerias and enjoyed delicious cheese quesadillas with beans, accompanied by freshly squeezed orange juice.  Total price:  36 pesos. Before lunch, we had a swim in the warm, but choppy waters, due to the usual breeziness of this beach.  Beautiful sight -  a young, athletic Mexican riding his white horse into low waves breaking onto the shore.

MEZCALES CLINIC:  Jill Goldstein, Founder and Director of  Pause 4 Paws, contacted PEACEAnimals about homeless cats living on el Tigre golf course in Nayarit. Jill, who lives in Minnesota, was visiting her vacationing parents at el Tigre.  She was put in touch with Soraya and Alemendra of Puro Gato, who drove out to the golf course Tuesday evening and trapped one of the cats.  Jill was able to pick up the other four, who were very tame.  Jesús Villavicencio, founder and president of of SOS Nayarit,AC,  overnighted the five cats. At 7:30 Wednesday morning, Soraya met Jesús at his home and drove with him in his truck to the nearby PEACEAnimals clinic in nearby Mezcales, along with el Tigre cats (three male cats, one of which had already been neutered,  and two female cats -both discovered to be pregnant) and five other Puro Gato rescue cats, plus a neighbor and his dog.

Although we have corresponded via email, I had never met Jesús before visiting the clinic n Thursday.  Jesús, who works tirelessly for the animals,  said he has been able to find good homes for 123 dogs this past year.  Impressed by his dedication, Argentine artist, María Mihanovich, is donating

EDUCATION PROGRAM:  No schools were available for Mezcales, so Leslie set up a table and displays at Plaza Caracól on Tuesday and interacted with over 100 people.  Schools will now be on Easter break for two weeks.

HUMANE SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL:  Because of the extreme overpopulation of cats and dogs in México, HSI is opening offices in Mexico City.  Mexico is apparently ranked number one in the world for overpopulation of cats and dogs and ranked number three in the world regarding animal cruelty.

Due to non-sterilization and a lack of education, there are thousands of homeless cats and dogs living on the streets in Puerto Vallarta.  There are many hundreds waiting to be adopted in foster homes,  sanctuaries and the Centro de Acopio.   If you can foster an animal, have found a cat or dog, or would like to adopt a cat or dog, Please check our website on the "resource" tab for names and contacts of refuges, vets, etc.

RESCUED:  This blog normally does not report rescues, as there are hundreds in this town, and the mission of PEACEAnimals is to prevent the future suffering of animals by preventing births.  Am making an exception.today.  Jodi Johnson, who was vacationing in la Cruz, watched a beautiful white cat give birth to five kittens under a picnic table on the beach.  She took all of them back to her condo and asked PV Angels for help on Saturday, the day before she was leaving for the U.S.   I was forwarded the message and contacted all the cat sanctuaries and Shannon Beston, who feeds the isla Cuale cats.  Shannon agreed to foster the feline family, so Jodi drove all  of them to Vallarta.  The kittens are five days old and are beautiful, like their sweet mama.  They´ll all be spayed and neutered in two months at a PEACEAnimals clinic and available for adoption.
