VOLCANES/VOLCANOES

GATHERING CLOUDS - COSTCO PARKING LOT AT 7:30 IN THE MORNING

White clouds and grey clouds gather in the mornings in anticipation of the rainy season, and later disperse.  Air temperature is in the high 80´s, with humidity ranging between 60% and 70%.  Water temperature in the bay is about 80 degrees farenheit and the manta rays and humans are enjoying it. Couples kiss beneath trees in the coolness of the isla Cuale.  It´s unseasonably hot and humid.
VOLCANES

CLINIC IN VOLCANES: The clinic in Volcanes took place as the result of a FB message sent to Candace Shaw, board member of PEACEAnimals.  Megan Shelton, the young and very pretty teacher and director of Volcanes Community Education Project, offered the library as a location for a clinic.  On Monday, Leslie Caratachea and I met Megan  in the parking lot of Costco and followed her for a twenty-five minute, many-turns drive to the dusty, poor colonia of volcanes.  Two buildings sit next to each other on a dirt hillside -  Primaria Urbana 1170, the government school with approximately 300 students from grades one through six,  and the former government school, which is now the Volcanes Community Education Project. /  Several dogs were waiting outside the school´s fenced-in yard and there were more inside, including a large black and white dog with a broken leg and a sad looking blonde Cocker.
MEGAN Y LESLIE EN FRENTE DE LA ESCUELA EN VOLCANES

Public school days are split in half between morning and afternoon classes.  Eighty to eighty-five percent of the public school students (plus a small number of adults) go to the Community Education after or before their regular classes.  The Education Project was founded in 2011 with the intention of breaking the cycle of poverty and is funded by Rotary Clubs and various individuals.  In addition to Megan, there are two other teachers who give courses in computer and English without charge.  These classes are not offered at the public school.    There are families so impoverished that children are sent to school in the mornings without having eaten breakfast and to the afternoon sessions without lunch.
COCINA/RESTAURANTE EN LA ESCUELA DE VOLCANES
The Education Project donated a small kitchen/cafeteria to the public school.  Scouts from Canada came down to start the the building,  which was finished by the families of students.   Twenty-five to thirty of the children from the poorest families are given either an oatmeal with raisins breakfast or a taco lunch.   Both meals are served with water.  The other children either bring their meals or are able to purchase three tacos (with water) for four pesos.  There are also snacks to buy.  I enjoyed a delicious taco lunch (25 pesos each for visitors) and a refreshing agua de jamaica (hibiscus water) on Monday and Wednesday.   http://www.volcanesproject.com/

VOLCANES

Leslie gave her education presentation to the morning students at the government school, and on Wednesday, we were in the Education Project building for the first day of the free spay/neuter clinics.  Irene of Puro Gato brought twelve 8-10 week-old beautiful kittens, all of whom will be available for adoption next week.
GATITOS RESCATADOS DE PURO GATO - EN ADOPCIÓN
Although there was a long line of adults in children waiting for us before 9 AM, only two or three pet owners were turned away.  At thirty-nine cats and dogs, we were over our limit for the day.  A seven or eight-year old girl, whom Megan said was an excellent student, walked unprompted over to the donation box and put in a few coins.  A mother of one of the boy students  was watching and  asked her son and a friend go  to do the same.
REGISTRANDO MASCOTAS - VOLCANES
I noticed a medium-size, tan dog standing nearby that was obviously in heat.  She was alone and wasn´t being registered.   I asked a woman standing near the clinic if she knew whose dog it was.  She pointed to a sweet-looking young girl with dust-caked hair in a dirty pink t-shirt. The dog had followed the girl to school. I told the woman that the dog needed to be spayed and then kept in an enclosed space for two weeks.  On the streets, not only was the dog guaranteed to get pregnant, she was at great risk for TVT (transmissible veneral tumor).  If spayed and then let loose, although the dog couldn´t get pregnant, she was subject to not only infection roaming the dusty roads, but would definitely be mounted and at great risk for injury due to the recent surgery.  The scent of estrus lingers for two weeks.  The woman shook her head and said the child´s mother wouldn´t care for the dog if she couldn´t care for her daughter. After I arrived back home and after sending sending emails to Megan and a few animal rescuers,  Soraya of Puro Gato very generously agreed to foster this nice dog.  "Canela" was spayed Thursday morning, and Frank Ohly, one of our regular star volunteers,  gave her a ride to Soraya´s home that afternoon.   In two weeks,  Canela will be returned by Megan to the family, and if this hasn´t contacted TVT,  Canela´s life has been saved.

"CANELA" - LA PERRITA QUE ESTABA EN CELO.  NO ESTABA EL PRIMER DIÁI EN LA CLÍNICA POR CIRUGÍA - NADA MÁS PARA VISITAR A SU FAMILIA.  EL DÍA SIGIENTE ESTABA OPERADA.
"CANELA" EN CASA PUENTE DE PURO GATO PARA 2 SEMANAS

I asked several residents why this far away from everything neighborhood was given the name of "volcanes" ("volcanoes").  Shrugs of shoulders and shy smiles.  No one knew.  Later in the day, when I was taking a photograph of boys in the rocky dirt school playground, I noticed the pointy little hills behind it, and thought perhaps this was why the place had gotten its unlikely name.

Thank you to Megan for contacting PEACEAnimals for a clinic in Volcanes.  Thank you for the extraordinary work you are doing for the community. Thank you for helping save the children.

SMALL ACTIONS MATTER

SUNSET ON THE MALECÓN  -  PUESTA DEL SOL

EL MALECÓN EN PUERTO VALLARTA

There are so many people and places and animals and things that need saving. There are many times when I wish I were somewhere else, trying to help save something else more important than cats and dogs.   They are not in danger of becoming extinct.  Quite the opposite.  They keep being born to suffer.  But I am here in this astonishingly beautiful place and see the misery of the animals on the street and want the suffering to eventually end.  Thank you to those individuals and groups that are committed to making things better for all things everywhere.  Small actions matter.
CALLE 8 DE MAYO - COAPINOLE

I took a 25-minute taxi ride to Coapinole on Saturday, as our car was still in the shop.  We drove north through the very lively municipality of Pitillal and then east towards the foothills.  As we passed a small green lake in the middle of a grassy area, the driver said that it was very mysterious how the level of the water never rose or fell.  There are apparently no crocodiles in the lake, but it is completely fenced in with no access to it.  Three dusty blocks east of the little lake in an empty concrete house is where the clinic took place.
OTRA VISTA DE LA CALLE 8 DE MAYO - COAPINOLE

When I arrived shortly before nine,  the clinic was already at capacity, as Saturday is half-day.  Cats and dogs were already registered and in kennels.  Although some pet owners had arrived as early as seven,  there was still a small group of people waiting with pets, hoping the vets would take more.   A quiet, slender teen-age boy with a baseball cap on
RESCATADA Y ESTERILIZADA - COAPINOLE
backwards brought in three eight-week old puppies that he had found in the street.  He had taken them for their first shots and said they had all been spoken for.  The boy told me that he had recently rescued a total of twelve kittens and had taken them to be fixed and then found homes for all of them.  An attractive plump woman in levi shorts and a turquoise t-shirt brought in a neighbor´s male brindle dog with a rope tied around his neck.  The owner of the dog had found it stuck to a female dog and had forcefully pulled him off, causing injuries to the male dog.  That forceful action may have injured the female dog, but no one brought her in.   A pretty, dark-haired young woman was waiting with a large cardboard box holding a mama cat and three kittens.  The cats weren´t hers, but she had wanted to help a friend.  Five extra animals over the Saturday limit were accepted, in part because there was a volunteer vet helping -  the young Jesús Isidro Pacheco Ponce.  The mama cat was spayed, but unfortunately her kittens and a few other cats and dogs had to be turned away.  We will return to this colonia soon.
CLÍNICA MUY LLENA EN COAPINOLE

STERILIZATIONS IN COLONIA COAPINOLE - May 20-23

Male dogs- 23; Female dogs - 45; Male cats - 31; Female cats - 43

TOTAL:  142 cats and dogs - an astonishing number accomplished by a extremely remarkable vet team.

This clinic was paid for in part by the generous grant of $5,000 USD by the Marchig Animal Welfare Trust, which is headquartered in Scotland.  At a cost of $1,800 USD per clinic week, the Marchig Animal Welfare Trust sponsored two past clinics:
San Vicente, Nayarit - April 29-May 2 =124 animals sterilized; Loma Bonita - May 6- 9 = 124 animals.  With a $1,400 balance remaining, 78% of a third clinic is paid for = approximately 110 cats and dogs sterilized.  TOTAL NUMBER OF ANIMALS STERILIZED THANKS TO THE MARCHIG ANIMAL WELFARE TRUST= 330.

All pet registration forms with signatures of owners or rescuers are submitted by Dr. Poli to the local department of health, with copies to PEACEAnimals.

CATS AND KITTENS:  Shannon Beston reports that she and Adriana have seen 14 kittens dropped on the isla Cuale in the last 10 days that they have been able to collect. And there are always adult cats taken there, pets that someone no longer is able to keep or wants to keep. Some cats on the island are pregnant.   Wildlife suffers.  Soraya and Almendra of Puro Gato have a total of 35 abandoned kittens they´re fostering and need to find homes for.  I don´t know the numbers of all the other cats in other feline rescue organizations - AngeliCAT; Paraiso Felino; PurrProject - but it is in the hundreds, with thousands more living on the streets of Puerto Vallarta.
