MEZCALES AND THE MALECÒN

Looking down from the bridge where the Malecòn meets the Rìo Cuale, there is a young couple kissing on the ledge under the "sails," while an old American song from someone`s shop radio is loudly playing something about "the bliss of a kiss."

Laughing children on inner tubes bounce past rocks down the racing river   Swimming against the strong flow of the brown river emptying into the bay is a tanned young man with his chocolate Lab.

Further out in the bay, teenagers sit on surf boards atop small swells waiting for something that could resemble a wave.

On the sidewalk, two tattooed young men practice their handstands.  Dark rain clouds are scudding in from the south and we scatter for shelter.

REGARDING ANIMALS:  Jeremy Bentham, 18th century  English author, jurist, philosophist, legal and social reformer and recently recognized as an early animal advocate, wrote the following regarding animals:  "It doesn't matter if they can reason; it doesn't matter if they can speak; what does matter is if they can suffer."

I saw the sign below in a park-like zoo in northern India last November.

BULLFIGHTING:  From the International Movement Against Bullfighting: " The truth is, if a creature suffers then there can be no moral justification for refusing to take that suffering into consideration. All animals are sentient beings that experience joy, happiness, fear and pain, in the same way that human beings do. We can have no right whatsoever to make them suffer for our "enjoyment". If any torture inflicted to an animal deserves condemnation, bullfights are the worst kind of torture since they are performed solely in the name of entertainment. We must end the animals' torture and stop these shows of brutality and violence. It is too small a step from the intentional infliction of pain on an animal to the torture and killing of human beings."     If you feel bullfighting is cruel, please take action.   www.iwab.org.
CLASE GRATIS DE EDUCACIÒN EN LA CLÌNICA DE PEACE

"AYUDA A LOS ANIMALES"   ("HELP THE ANIMALS")  is the free mobile spay/neuter program of PEACE. The clinics need funding and are the only solution to the enormous overpopulation of cats and dogs.  Four thousand cats and dogs were sterilized in the area of the Bay of Banderas in 2011.  Our mission is to prevent the future suffering of animals.   To donate, please see www.peacemexico.org    PEACE has tax-free status in the U.S., Mexico and Canada. www.peacemexico.org       http://www.facebook.com/Peace.Mexico

OTHER  PEACE PROGRAMS:  See Beth Brennan`s blog:www.peacemexico.wordpress.com    http://www.facebook.com/Peace.Mexico

CLINICS NEED:  Funding, volunteers, locations for our mobile unit and donations of vet and pet supplies, used towels, sheets, collars and leashes.
EMILY L`HOIST, DIRECTOR DE LAS CLASES DE EDUCACIÒN EN LAS CLINICAS, REGISTRANDO MASCOTAS

MEZCALES, NAYARIT is a clean beach town approximately 30 minutes south of  Puerto Vallata.  The clinic took place in a government office with air conditioning and taped spa music playing.  Because flyers had been distributed and because the residents are very familiar with the PEACE clinics, people brought their animals to us.  Usually, we have to go out looking and asking for pets to sterilize.

When I went on Thursday, at 32 cats and dogs, we had to ask people to come back Friday or Saturday.     Dani Peters, who moved to La Cruz from California a month ago, was the other volunteer and was an excellent one.    As no one had to go looking for animals to bring to the clinic, we were able to more easily manage the cats and dogs on the recovery table.  I picked off approximately 100 ticks from a darling black and white dog wearing a worn red collar with a little bell attached. There were engorged ticks in her ears, between all her toes and all over her body.  I had met the family who owner her and they obviously were devoted to their pets, but didn`t understand the importance of keeping their dogs free of ticks.   Erlichia, rampant in Mexico, is transmitted by the brown tick, which attacks the animals` organs and can cause death.

CITY STREETS NEEDS CLEAN-UP: Last week, garbage and trash in most colonias was collected on Thursday morning.  It wasn`t collected again until Monday morning. At one time not so long ago, trash was collected daily on street corners.   Collection schedule last year was reduced to three times a week.  Last week it was twice a week.  Number to call for Public Works is 223 2500.  City funds seem to be the issue.   Photos attached of four days of accumulated trash on Monday,  three blocks up from the Malecon and two blocks south of the very upscale Cafè des Artistes. Trash was collected Monday but on Wednesday, the corner was once again a foul smelling mess.

STERILIZATIONS in La Floresta - July 11-14.  Male cats - 14; Female cats - 16; Female dogs - 22; Male dogs - 10  TOTAL - 62

Thank you to Maria de Los Angeles German Barron, who is an angel to the animals.  She arranged for the clinic location in la Floresta, put up posters, advised taxi drivers and brought lunch every day to the clinic staff.  Minus the lunches, she has done the same for Mezcales.  This is in addition to currently providing a foster home to 10 dogs that she rescued.

STERILIZATIONS in Mezcales, Nay.- July 18-21 - Numbers not yet received.

DONATIONS:  $25 E.E. U.U. - From Vicky Thorne-Ohly - for post-surgery care for "Nick," the puppy that fell off a roof in Bucerias

Two tons (!|| of Science Diet from Hill`s in Guadalajara arrived on Wednesday.  I filled our car with bags and boxes and delivered to the Mezcales clinic on Thursday.  There are many poor families who bring their dogs and cats to the clinics.  Animals need an extra boost after surgery and this helps. A portion of this donation is being set aside for dogs at the Acopio (15 there on Wednesday, including a small female French Poodle), to AngelCAT if there is any cat food in the shipment; and to Anselmo De Anda, who is fostering dogs, three at a time, from the Acopio until they find permanent homes. For each adoption, Anselmo can rescue another Acopio dog.  Thank you to Manager Gerardo Perez, who has never said no to helping.

The government truck from Guadalajara arrives at the Acopio every two weeks to take some dogs back to Guadalajara for mass electrocution.   Presumably this is because the city government here in Vallarta doesn`t have money for meds for the Acopio.   AngeliCAT has been removing all  kittens and cats from the Acopio.  The dogs need saving.  Open Monday-Friday from 8 AM-3 PM.  Telephone for the Acopio is 293-3690.
